It depends on your state, country or region. Would, in my area, I have to prove the legitimate self-defense. I was involved in fights many times before, and I'm the first Dan in Taekwondo and had never amounting to grievous bodily harm. Ask a policeman or a prosecutor in this case. It's my best advice.
Personally, I use everything that I could join hands to escape from a multiple crisis lay. That said, I can not imagine that there is sufficient time for the gloves. If you have time to do that, you have time to escape. Always pay attention, not to start something, or even seems to have begun. Not intended to be attacked to live simply. If you are escaping to other remedies, which are all there.

It could be ugly legal. You should be able to show the self-defense booster, and not go into the water.
Has in this era law that has been delayed .... really ... , if someone attacked another person back in the day? One of them would go to the hospital and that's all.
