Backpack trip to east coast from the UK? - cruising spots ny

Hello everyone! We (4 of us) is planning a trip back in 10-14 days for the states of the United Kingdom (New York, Phil Washington ...) next summer. We plan to rent a car and a ride in the Southern District of New York a few days of closure of each pair city.It a kind of "DIY" tour, reduce costs, but not sure if we actually or better , on a tour with hotels Fixed go / motels, tourist guides, etc.? What do you think?
(There is no GPS are built in the car, right?)
Even if someone comments, worth seeing - and have not lost outside of the mandatory sights more than welcome.
